Fishing for compliments

For our June Loves Local, we've curated picks with father's day in mind, though they're great for the summer season, and for anyone looking to try something new.

Hanson's Fishing Outfitters

For over 40 years, Hanson's Fishing Outfitters has been the go to spot for fishing enthusiasts. It's located in the Grain Exchange Building, conveniently central to each of our locations. Outside of fishing, we love their Filson bags and apparel. And, if you're looking for a great new adventure to try either by yourself or with a group, they offer Fly Fishing Bootcamps at their river house located on the banks of the Bow.

They're offering 10% off everything in the store to our guests; just show this email.

The value of a haircut

Hotel Arts stylist Kenna getting down and dirty to give her client the perfect cut at last week's Homeless ID fair.

Hotel Arts stylist Kenna getting down and dirty to give her client the perfect cut at last week's Homeless ID fair.

For us, it can be easy to lose perspective and see a haircut as a part of our routine, getting a trim every few weeks as needed. Recently, our team was reminded of exactly what a good hair cut can mean for some amazing folks in need. A fresh hair cut can elevate your mood, update your look, and offer some added confidence, but it can also offer a little humanity and relaxation for those in need.

This past Thursday, we joined the Mustard Seed, Calgary Legal Guidance, The New Urban Registry, and a number of other local agencies who serve our city’s homeless population for an Identification Information Fair.

“As a community, we are showing people who are homeless their value and that we care about them,” said Rachel Shepherd, Homeless Outreach Program Advocate for Calgary Legal Guidance. “I think all people can understand how it feels to have some confidence; my clients struggle with their most basic needs, so to have that boost in confidence and to feel like a professional is willing to take the time out of their day to provide this service, it’s amazing.”

Hotel Arts stylists Brenna, Kenna, and Ashley S. waiting to cut some hair!

Hedkandi stylists Kenna, Brenna, Ashley S., Kim, Emily, Kristina, and Sasha were able to provide haircuts for fifty people as part of the identification fair; a majority of them then received photo identification, which is a necessity for accessing services like low-income transit passes and even social benefits. Identification can also help people to file their taxes, rent apartments, get jobs, or even apply for social benefits and get into treatment programs.

We can’t express enough gratitude to each of the agencies who help support and serve our city’s homeless population for allowing us to take part in such a wonderful event, and we encourage our guests to check them each out to learn more about the work they’re doing or to support them by donating time or money!

The perfect downtown date night

We’re sure you’ve noticed we rarely venture out of our downtown bubble. But can you blame us? There’s so much to see and do within the city’s core, and we love seeing friendly faces out and about! Over the past few months, our Hotel Arts neighbourhood on first street has seen some new additions, so we took it upon ourselves to plan the perfect downtown date night complete with dinner, drinks, and a show—just for you and yours! You’re welcome in advance!

Foreign Concept

First stop, dinner! You can’t be your best self on an empty stomach. Foreign Concept offers a unique, modern take on Vietnamese that has been satisfying our bellies since it opened towards the end of last year. After dinner, walk a block and a half north and grab a drink (or five) at our next Loves Local pick…

This place is a wine lover's heaven! With over 250 bottles on the menu, and expert sommeliers on staff, you’ll never be disappointed. The menu, however small, has an impactful assortment of cheese, charcuterie, and light bites. The space is small enough that walking by, you might miss it. AKA the perfect lowkey atmosphere for your intimate night out. Now, it’s show time!

Calgary Underground Film Festival

Since 2003, CUFF has showcased programming that defies convention and embraces diversity. From horror, sci-fi and fantasty, to comedies, thrillers and music-related films, they always feature local and international films and add a burst of culture to our city. We’re thankful for our resident film buff and guest services team lead Natalie, who was gracious enough to highlight some of her choices at this year’s fest:

From Natalie: "I personally find film to be the best way to story tell, there are so many creative and visionary ways to express yourself and sharing it with the world, which can be so vulnerable.

In the fall, I'm enrolled in the two year film program at SAIT, where I'll learn writing, producing, editing and the technical aspects of shooting with a film camera."

I loooooove thrillers, especially in an unexpected or foreign setting. Berlin's such a beautiful and super cool city, so I'm excited and curious to see what the cinematography looks like.

Are We Not Cats.jpg

I chose this film because I'm a huge fan of strange love and weirder love stories! Romantic and horror aren't two words you'd generally put together, so this should be interesting!

NUFF SAID! G Funk is a story about some of my favourite rappers (Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Warren G.). I seriously LOVE west coast hip-hop and the soundtrack is AMAZING. Should be fun!!

Theatre Calgary's Crazy for You

Film is great and all, but nothing compares to live theatre! We are so excited for Theatre Calgary’s upcoming musical Crazy for You, about a young banker sent to the sleepy town of Deadrock to foreclose a rundown theatre. Get your tickets here.

We’re giving away two tickets to the show soon, so follow us on Instagram and stay tuned.

Superior Paint for Extraordinary Artists

We are so pleased to announce we now carry Pulp Riot Colour for colour services requiring a next-level creative colour.

Pulp Riot colour was founded by David and Alexis Thurston, the founders of Butterfly Loft Salon in Los Angeles. We always believe hair stylists have it best when backed by other hair stylists, and that’s why we chose to carry this line.

The colours apply easier for our guests, are more vibrant than what we’ve used before, and fade truer to tone. As well, Pulp Riot is 100% vegan, ammonia free, and cruelty free.

The need to know:

To our guests – your hair needs to be pre-lightened for best results with a Pulp Riot colour. If you’re interested in booking a vibrant colour service, call your Hedkandi of choice and speak with one of our guest services team members to ensure you’re booked appropriately.

As with any “vivid” service, the lighter the hair, the brighter the results. After you’ve received your service, be sure to wash with sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner every few days. Focus your shampoo on the root, and let the rest rinse through.

To ensure your experience, Pulp Riot Colour services require a consultation with your stylist prior to booking.

Our Stylists' work:

We're ready for a vacation (and you probably deserve one too!)

It feels like we just barely made it out of winter, and being snowed up for so long has us ready to show up at the airport, bags packed, and hop on the first flight to an equator-area destination ASAP. Fortunately for us, we just opened our own little beach oasis (Butter Bankers Hall) where we can stare at beach-inspired art from NewZones Gallery. Thus, this month's Hedkandi Loves Local is all about embracing (and creating) the STAYCATION - below, you'll find our tips, tricks, and ideas for saying 'goodbye' to the winter blues and 'hello' to the storm of events that seem to come up as the snow melts and the days get longer!

First things first - studies show that being around plants boosts your memory retention and concentration, so part one of our staycation is ensuring we get some beautiful greenery at home! Located in Inglewood, Plant is the perfect boutique shop to learn about gardening, indoor plants, and more. The space is beautiful, the staff so well-informed (we've killed our share of plants at home - but they're so helpful!), and the selection and workshops are impeccable. We'd be remiss if we didn't admit that we've gone there just to surround ourselves with all of the green beauties in the shop and stuck around for one or two (or three) hours.

Now that you're mood's a little elevated from your new green friend(s), it's time for you to soak up some sunshine! We prefer a spray tan to add some colour to our complexions. Our friends at Bronze Baxx use an oil, alcohol, and fragrance free solution, administered by a professional air brush artist. They have offered each of our guests a special offer of $39 for their spring spray tan, plus a free mini lotion to help extend its staying power* (savings of  $25!). They have four locations across the city and one in Airdrie. To book, call 403-244-2299.

Cult Classics are on sale now!

For our feature on our stylist's cult classic favourites, we thought we'd ask members of our team why they love these products - watch the videos below!

Styling Creme

Tha from Calgary's Hedkandi salon loves Bumble and Bumble's Styling Creme for her hair.

Baby, you make my heart beat faster...

Valentine's Day has come and gone, but our love never stops flowing. For February's Hedkandi Loves Local, we want to help out an organization in need this month (we love supporting great causes, we can't help it!). When you're feeling good about giving to a great cause, you should reward yourself - so afterwards we're going shopping for home decor at Steeling Home.

Canadian Blood Services

Canadian Blood Services (CBS) needs our help - February and March are extremely slow for blood donations and we're hoping to fill up some appointments and ensure that Calgarians who require life-saving blood are able to get it. The need for blood is constant, and every donation counts. As a thank you for your donation, we've worked in some incentives below.

Ways to Support Canadian Blood Services:

1. Make a blood donation or organize a group donation (we are too!),

  • Once you do, take a photo at the station set-up in the CBS waiting area and post about it on social media - be sure to tag us @HedkandiSalon and use their hash tag #givelifeyyc. As a thank you, we'll give you $20 off your next service*.
  • Once you donate, you can also enter to win a $150 Hedkandi prize package in their waiting area.

2. If you're unable to give blood, you could join the one match program.

Not sure if you are eligible to donate? Take the eligibility quiz.

Want more information on the One Match Program? Visit here.

The downtown clinic is located just a few blocks from our 8 Street location at 737 13 Ave SW, and the donation clinic is open at the following times:

  • Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Monday to Thursday (evenings), 3 to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Steeling Home

Steeling Home is a general store full of unique, vintage, and one of a kind pieces. Their cozy atmosphere and hand-picked array of home decor, stationery, and lifestyle products makes for perfect shopping.

You can visit Steeling Home at 1010 17 Ave SW, sandwiched between Cibo and Caffe Beano.

Make 2017 the Year of the Knockout!

How are those New Year's resolutions coming along? We're two weeks into 2017 and already need a refresh on our workout routine - luckily for us, there's a new studio pulling all the punches we need.

Make 2017 the 'Year of the Knockout' #YOTK. UNDRCARD is Calgary's premier boxing studio with classes that combine real boxing movement with a motivational night club inspired environment led by Calgary's top instructors and experienced boxers. Best of all, the classes are open to all abilities, novice to advanced.

In addition to classes, they have a full gym, boxing ring, and offer private training. The space also features Yo Adrian! Food and coffee bar, and a corner store with products from Herschel, Reigning Champ, and more.

Knockout Hair, Knockout Workout

As our guest, UNDRCARD wants to give you a free class to try it out. Join the fight club below - all you have to do is sign up, choose your class, and enter the code HEDKANDIJAN at checkout for your complimentary workout.

Now as great as your new workout is, it's important to take care of yourself and ensure you have downtime. We suggest checking out Decidedly Jazz Danceworks' new show, Juliet and Romeo, which opens Wednesday, Jan. 18 and runs until Jan. 28. Tickets are available here.

The show is a reimagining of the classic Shakespearean play about two star-crossed lovers, but shaken up through live music and dance in true DJD style.

Make sure you follow us on Instagram, because we'll be giving away two tickets this week.

*Parents please note, the performance contains mature content.

"New year, new you." It's cliché, but we totally get the sentiment - it's nice to have a clean break and start fresh. That could mean a new workout routine, a commitment to reading more, a wild makeover or better budgeting. Whatever your motif for the year is, we want to support you with the gift of free hair. So if you want to avoid paying for your services, here's two ways to do so:

Share the love
Did you know we'll award you $20 for every new person you send our way?* The potential for this, for you, is ridiculous; you could get free hair for life! Whether you refer one friend or twenty you will save money at your next appointment!

Here's how:

  1. Get an awesome hair cut or colour with one of our stylists.
  2. Receive a compliment on it.
  3. Invite that person to visit us (we've got cards for that, too - ask our guest services team or your stylist next time you're in!)
  4. They come in, get $20 off their visit, and a $20 credit is applied to your account.
  5. Repeat!

If you want to start saving now, click below to email your friends or spread the word on social media!

Make your hair care products work for you

One year ago we launched our Hedkandi Rewards points program, so you can get more value when you spend money on retail in the salon. Since then, we've awarded nearly $15,000 in discounted services and products to our guests because we love and appreciate you, and we want you to know! You can read a full breakdown of how the program works here.

Hedkandi loves you!

*Referral credits are awarded to your account after your person's first appointment.

Holiday Party Hair Inspiration

Holiday party season is upon us - and we know our guests don't always have time to get their hair styled for their event. While we'd love to see you, we totally get the busyness inherent in this time of year, and thought we'd gift you some easy styles you can do yourself! Read on for five holiday looks that are easily obtainable, and use only a few Bumble and Bumble hair products.

  • Bb. Cityswept Finish
  • Bb. Dryspun Thickening Hairspray
  • Bb. Surf Foam Spray Blow Dry
  • Bb. Hair Powder (in your preferred colour)
  • Flat iron and/or curling iron
  • Bobby pins and hair bungees

Inspired by Brigitte Bardot's glorious bouffant, this modern half-updo adds glamour and volume, while maintaining that "je nais sais quoi" messiness that gives French women their disaffected coolness.

1. Apply Bb. Dryspun at the root and midshaft, then backcomb the hair.

2. Anchor the crown of the head with your fingers, then merge in the sides.

3. Pin and knot the finishing pieces from the side to support the 'bouffant.'

4. Bend the loose hair (accordion style) with a flat iron and add a bit of sheen and polish with Bb. Cityswept.

This sexy, high (but not too high) pony is dishevelled to add an air of mystery and allure -- Perfect for your skin-tight holiday dress.

1. Gather the hair into a pony at the crown of the head, using a brush or comb to collect it all.

2. Wrap a thin section of hair around the base of the pony and use a hair bungee to secure.

3. Once the pony is in place, distress the hair by pulling and shaking it.

4. Cover any unsightly seams (scalp peeking through)using Bb. Hair powder (we used black on our model).

5. Wrap the base of the pony with an accessory, like a thick bracelet or hair tie, for a little extra holiday glitz.

Obviously inspired by Jane Fonda's iconic character, this full-bodied bombshell hair would look great with a glamorous holiday dress, or add huge sex appeal to a more laidback suit-look, á la the Olsen twins.

1. Curl the hair all over using your preferred curling iron size. Remember, the smaller the rod, the tighter the curl.

2. Once again, back comb the hair and french lace it to add body.

3. Shift the hair's part to a deep side part, then just tousle and mess it up.

Add an element of class to your holiday party with an undone french twist. The textured finish complements your holiday style, without making you look "too perfect."

1. Apply Bb. Dryspun at the root and mid-shift, then back comb.

2. Roll hair into a rough french twist and pin.

3. Set with Bb. Surf Foam Spray on the dry hair. This adds the perfect amount of grit and texture to complete that messy, undone look.

4. Add an accessory if desired (we used a necklace we had lying around). This created a more dramatic silhouette on the hair shape.

We know our short-haired ladies want to try something new, too, so this one's for you! Adding some curl and sheen to your hair is the perfect way to change up your look for party season!

1. Curl the hair all over, then tousle and spray with both Bb. Dryspun (for texture and hold) and Bb. Cityswept (for shine and shape).

Our creative & education director Kristin Page discussed the looks on Global News' morning show - watch the video here.

Pacekids Programs

It’s *officially* the holidays and we are beyond excited! As a small family business, we know the difference shopping at local businesses can make and want to encourage our guests to do as much of their holiday shopping locally as they can. That why this month’s loves local features a local holiday shopping guide and the perfect charity to support this Christmas.

As a reminder, $5 from every $150 you purchase in gift cards will go to our charity of choice – last month it was the Calgary Poppy Fund – and this month it’s Pacekids Programs an organization that provides exceptional therapy and education opportunities to children with special needs.

Pacekids Programs

Pacekids relies heavily on the generosity of the community. Donations and grants from community minded individuals, organizations and corporations help provide the children with the excellent programming and care that they require. We’ve partnered with Pacekids to try and help them provide the best possible programs and services to the Calgary families they support.

As our guest we ask you to join us in supporting children with special needs’ education through their Fund A Child initiative. As a Fund a Child donor, you will experience firsthand the day-to-day realities, challenges and successes of children within the Pacekids Early Childhood Services (ECS) program.

Through this partnership, we have the option to support Pacekids through three funding opportunities:

  • Support Hedkandi’s Fund A Child efforts at your preferred dollar amount
  • Support Fund A Child’s ‘basic’ programming at Pacekids (includes general program costs for one child - $600/year)
  • Support Fund A Child’s ‘enhanced’ programming at Pacekids (includes equipment, resources, and field trips on top of general program costs for one child - $1,000/year)

Pacekids’ Mission: Pacekids Programs is family focused and strives for excellence in the therapy, education and family empowerment of children with special needs.

A gift for you, me, he, she, they, we, and charity!

We’re finally in the holiday spirit and we just want to spend our days eating our weight in sugar cookies, drinking too much egg nog, visiting with our guests and cozying up with our families. Notice how we didn’t mention shopping for gifts?

Hedkandi loves giving, but we don’t want to lose that precious time with the ones we love, and we figure you’re the same. When you pop by to get your hair done for the holidays, why not consolidate your shopping and grab some gift cards and product from us? For every $150 you spend on gift cards, we’ll gift you a complimentary Bb. Calgary Poppy Fund and Veteran's Food Bank

Halloween’s over and just like that it’s on to Remembrance Day and Christmas planning. For our Hedkandi Loves Local this month, we want to work with our guests to make a difference. As you may have read, because of the tough times people in our province are facing, food bank usage has gone up exponentially.

As a result of this, the shelves at the Veterans’ Food Bank sit empty. While food donations are valuable, cash donations are even better because of the organization’s ability to triple their buying power. Across our salons and with our guests, we hope to raise as much money as possible to help our Veterans this month.

Calgary Poppy Fund and Veteran’s Food Bank

The Calgary Poppy Fund & Veteran’s Food Bank serves veterans and their dependents who are in need, regardless of age. Those accessing the food bank receive a hamper set valued at $400 and $400 gift cards to purchase fresh veggies, milk, and other perishables (one per two months). In addition, the organization purchases daily living aids such as walkers, scooters, wheelchairs, canes, bath aids, and bus passes for those they support. Those who need their services can also get support on major expenses like hearing aids, prescription medicine, medical equipment, shelter, dental or eye care, or just paying shelter or utility bills where needed.

At Hedkandi, we feel this organization is wildly important and we invite our guests to help us support their work. This year, they expect their major expenses to reach over $450,000. We now have poppies available at each of our salon locations for donation, or you can donate online here:

In addition our monthly promotion (launching Nov. 14) will provide another way to help support this amazing organization - so check our blog again soon!

17 years ago our fearless leader Jereme Bokitch started a salon that would grow to become three distinct brands, six locations (we’re looking at you, Butter Bankers Hall), and one close-knit family. He had a passion for his craft, a hope to support his peers, and an unbeatable vision. Our family has grown and changed throughout this time, and through our trials and triumphs, we’ve learned it’s important to stay gracious.

To celebrate our birthday, we wanted to say thank you to all of our amazing guests who made this possible! In honour of our 17th birthday, enjoy 17% off all retail purchases this month – from Bumble and Bumble to Hot Tools from Babyliss, Sam Villa, Aria, to Olaplex Hair Perfector to Invisibobbles hair ties.

P.S. Bring cake!

Two Hedkandi Stylists win Bumble and Bumble's "Double Take" Contest

We are so pleased to announce that Kim Seibel from our 8 Street location was one of two grand prize winners of Bumble and Bumble's "Double Take" Contest! She created a cut and style that were handpicked by Bb. Global Artistic Director Laurent Philippon out of hundreds of submissions. CONGRATULATIONS KIM!

The Challenge: Stylists from across Bumble and Bumble's North American network were tasked with "creating a series of transformative images in three stages: a 'before' look, cut transformation, and style transformation." Hedkandi's winners will now be flown to New York City to shoot an editorial with Laurent.

Kim's Look: Kim has always been fascinated by British hairstyles in the '60s and '70s - which led to this rendition of the liberating, punky "Chelsea" cut.

Hotel Arts stylist Lindsay Larsen was a grand prize winner too! Her transformation was the winner out of three finalists posted to Instagram. Thanks to everyone who supported Lindsay's beautiful look.

Lindsay's Look: Lindsay crafted a cut to enhance her model's curls. She added soft, Patti Smith-inspired fringe, giving the look an elevated feel.

Lindsay was recently at New York Fashion Week working behind the scenes of a number of runway shows with Bumble and Bumble's runway styling team.

We are so proud of these two, and so grateful to Bumble and Bumble for always providing our salon with opportunities to learn, grow, and be creative!
